We have some big news to share with everyone. Mike Sweeney finally finished his newest book called "Network Security using Linux". This new book is published by our sister site, www.packetpress.net and is completely self-published by Mike in conjunction with Lulu.com. In keeping with the spirt of Linux, the entire book has been written using OpenOffice 1.4. The pricing at this time is a special arrangement which will change once the Extended ISBN is issued. There are both a print and a PDF version available. The book covers how to use Linux as a security tool to secure and to monitor your network. Also covered is basic lockdown procedures for Linux, basic configuration of Linux as a LAMP server with Snort and other tools. All the Linux source files and RPMs used to create the book are available here at Packetattack for downloading so you can build along as you read through the book.

Speaking Out

We must remain vigilant of similar 'creeping restrictions' in today's Information Age -- the threat is not from a dictatorship, but clever corporations and ignorant lawmakers and people. With deepest respect to Holocaust victims and survivors reflected in Niemoller's original quote, this following adaptation appropriately reflects the path our information society is moving closer to reality...

"In America, they first came for the hackers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a hacker. Then they came for DeCSS, and I didn't speak up because I didn't watch DVDs. Then they came for Napster and MP3, and I didn't speak up because I didn't listen to MP3s. Then they came for the cryptographers and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a cryptographer. Then they came for the researchers and the curious, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a researcher and didn't question things. Then they came for me, but by that time there was no one left to speak up." --- Richard Forno, Washington, DC 2001

At a clients site the other day, we had to setup a very quick and dirty backup server and needed some CD burning software. The normal packages were not a solution due to cost so we found "Cheeta". This utility has a very small footprint tool and it's CHEAP. And it WORKS!! Check them out at CheetahBurner.com

Every had an image or a file get lost on a flash card? Accidentally delete that hot shot or favorite MP3 on your spare compact flash card? Packetattack has found a very cool solution in the form of a data recovery program that works on flash cards. We used it to recovery both pictures and some sound files that someone had thought were erased.. oops! It turns out we could get them back using PhotoRescue for Windows.
